AK Industrial Services (AKIS) removed 4” of existing cast-in-place bridge deck utilizing Ultra High Pressure (UHP) Hydrodemolition. The work was performed over the Cocheco River in Dover, NH. Hydrodemolition was selected to mitigate micro cracking, provide a highly bondable surface for new concrete and to ensure that all unsound concrete was removed.
One of the key challenges was collection of the water and debris at full-depth areas to prevent both from pouring into the river and creating a negative environmental impact. AKIS utilized a 6,000-gallon vacuum tank to collect and dispose of water and debris preventing it from entering the river below
The bridge is also located in the downtown area so there was a great deal of pedestrian traffic directly adjacent to the work zone. AKIS utilized debris screens and temporary fencing to protect the public.
