Union Pond Dam Spillway Rehabilitation

Project Overview

AK Industrial Services mobilized to Manchester, CT, to perform hydrodemolition on the Union Pond Dam Spillway for the rehabilitation project. The hydrodemolition portion of this project included using the Aqua Cutter robot and hand lances to remove concrete from the left and right spillways of the dam. AKIS removed 6,275 square feet of concrete to a depth of 6″.

For this project, AKIS was responsible for the hydrodemolition and the water treatment. AKIS brought a robot and the EcoClear to the site. The EcoClear is a water treatment system that uses a series of baffles, CO2, and coagulant and flocculent to treat used hydrodemolition water. The EcoClear balances the pH and reduces the suspended solids in the used water so that AKIS and general contractors are able to dispose of the used water into storm drains.

After AKIS finished the spillway hydrodemolition, the general contractor used shotcrete over the dam spillways to finish the overall rehabilitation project.
